It began as a celebration of the Locomotives on Highways Act of 1896, which increased the road speed limit to 14mph (from just 4mph). The London to Brighton Run - now called Veteran Car Run and sponsored by Bonhams and Hiscox - is the worlds longest running motoring event, having first run in 1896 when the Red Flag Act, which required motorised vehicles to be preceded by a man or woman waving a red flag or lantern, was repealed. The two-cylinder engine produced a heady six horsepower.
